Mostly I have done games in lands of fantasy. These are lands that you make up as you go along but eventually span into a coherent map that you could probably draw. I have also done one in the real world. Using real places. The first one I ever did and by far my favorite (though it was never finished) was a bit of both. This was way back when I was learning how to do these myself. My player Akita Gitano. If you fancy a look you can find it here: (It'd the only surviving online one in the hopes we can finish it one day) z15.invisionfree.com/Fex_Achipelago/index.php?s=83c786ea4dc7cd2a089a79c427a68343&showtopic=18&view=getnewpostUnfortunately, my partner in crime here went to university and as he's the site host nothing has been done in nearly a year. Point being: do you have any ideas on where you want this story to be. Fantasy, real world, space, another planet? just comment here and we can come to a decision.

So far our notes has suggested this land.
A Main room: Library
Library, ancient, books made from special trees so they can be brought to life by these gaurdians. This library part of a bigger world.
The books: Doors to other worlds that we can end up walking in and out of. Our own worlds and then some - maybe even books on the real world, books on deep space, books on underwater towns, history books, self help books. I guess I can put my ink to work again an draw up some rough maps of the library and maybe some surrounding area.

The planet Khula
I randomly plucked the name out of somewhere. Been thinking, what is it about this planet that means their's a rare book here. Why is it here? what type of planet is this. Just thinking aloud again - these are just ideas.
Its a green planet, plenty of marshland, rivers. The cities on this planet live on the marshes. Maybe hovering slightly above with some kind of technology and / or magic. The city itself can be a beautiful place with layers of life. Layers showing depth and history. It nay have things showing it to be quite old, therein is why the book would be there. These rare books sound like they've been around a while. Maybe he book he's hunting down is one of the oldest, from the first Shamans tree. It is often said some older magic is more potent. This old book could be the key to everything... i'm digressing... back to the land again.
If the world is such we could land in a swamp, or crash into some rally tall trees where we are meters off the ground. Or we could crash into the slums of this city, an area full of trouble - maybe the area the backlighters come from. Or we could even come down in a town separate from the city, one that's only half above the swamp and falling into decay - a poorer area. In a poorer area maybe we have a shop with salvage and the techno drawf can piece together some kind of techno transport.
This land need not be all marsh and swamp. Tall trees need solid lands, the planet could be full of islands of solid land where trees grow and crop is sown and (i'm going to have to order another coffee before i get kicked out the cafe)

But then the land may be completely different. it could be a rich metallic land a-midst mountains filled with mines of precious stones, Towns built out of the precious stones, and rich wild forests covering vast areas, weaving there way through towns and villages. Little rivers plunge down mountains nd flow through cities shimmering in the golden lights as the planets 2 suns dance of walls of marble. On the surface the place may be a wonder to the eyes. But again, a place with many layers and deep deep history, what's to be found in the old historic mines I wonder. What darkness lurks in the trees. The pirates live in trees tied together by ropes of woven silk. Some trees bent together and there branches intertwined by strong trolls. these trees are big enough and strong enough to take their weight. The trolls bend tree branches together like harvest mice do hay to create dwellings for the backlighters.

I like largely marsh planet possibly combining the trees and nest idea. There could be a lot of competition for solid land which would make people nervous about change or new things which could threaten the status quo.

Fighting over solid land? would make sense - a great idea.

The town would be like the calamita in areas, grand built by many hands, but also with the scars of war underneath. There would be sollid carpentry, mixed with metal workers and magic workers, cloths hang in areas that were inhabited by tribes of a people who place high stock on cloth on stone wall, different cultures in the city, but as you get more and more to the heart the cultures become more jointed, as if after the war they started in the centre to improve the place and worked outwards. The center would be the most like the calamita, with a palace, or maybe not, the calamita could be the palace and it parks in the center, housing for normal workers surrounds this parking spot maybe. The city doesn't really have walls, these were torn down as a mark of peace so the busy areas trail off into surrounding lands, swamp lands forest lands, mountain mines. The center of the civilisation the only joint one on the whole planet - it's a different story in other smaler towns.
Just throwing around ideas again, trying to get a picture in my mind so i can make it believable on paper (well, laptop)

There's some beautifully random ideas being thrown around here (I'm in the home of one of the judges - borrowing her internet) We're talking about a magnificent city built on land that's firm in places swamp like in others with plant life creeping in from the edges and climbing gleaming white walls like ivy. Bridges, controlled by magic swing from side to side, first providing a bridge over one river, then moving to be a bridge over a swamp. Areas of the towns are like a maze of houses, apartments, think china town back alleys. Close knit area, family generations living in a stones throw of each other all in some kind of specialised trade. An area of a constantly moving thriving market place- basically the type of place that one of my other stories would have an all out chase through the streets (kaz and Priestley could cause some major chaos in there) Other area too. Some wilder some smoother, but never in straight lines. Beautiful areas where the high and mighty live, with amazing forms of plantlife, tall buildings that are all conected to each other by discs magical flying slowly through the air from balcony to balcony. Ships travelling through the sky while on the ground you have horse and cart (or horse like creatures) , hover-bikes (like hovercrafts but cooler)and other cool un thought of modes of transport - more mini disks maybe that float along the street. the plant life diminishes from its wild look and gets tame and bautiful towards the city centre. They become carefully controlled so as not to encroach on buildings, instead they are manuvered to make perfect relaxation spots for the inhabitants to rest and enjoy a form of peace. Swampish areas nearer the center are caerfully maintained to look pretty, like a pond where people would picnic. Behind the central area is an industrial area, mostly used to build sky ships. This could be where our ship from the games start is taken for its repairs, Tegraine could be given a place to stay near or on this area to oversee the fixtures and take care of his tomes. Anyways just ideas - apparantly i've got to stop working - time for cake - i likes cake

I like both the idea of the city and cake. I've been thinking about the population. It all seems nice but the ruling class are all the same type of being, did the strongest diplomats take over and others are excluded or if you are elected to the conclave do you get transformed and why is it necessary to give up who you are? It's all as it seems and we need to understand the alien culture or is there even more wrong than first appears?

I think the idea of giving up one's identity to become a member of the conclave is a good one, James and Kei, I like the way you have described the city as one where the more wild and unruly outskirts give way to the ordered and highly structured inner city. I see this as a potential for a kind of Khula 'ghetto' where the Backlighters may live alongside others whose attitudes and values may be at variance with those of the conclave and Khula's General. We have already mooted the idea of the conclave not necessarily being all that they seem. This may lead to a situation where the Backlighters have some kind of local support against what might be perceived by the less privileged as an oppressive ruling body. I was thinking about the opulence of the Calamita and wondering, at what cost would a ship such as that be built? Maybe there is an underclass who believe money spent on such grandeur is drawing money away from where it is most needed in their society? Just thoughts. I do see Khula as a very pristine, almost clinical city and the idea that this is a very small part of the larger picture of Khula (with its desert, forests and mountainous regions, for example) is something that I believe could provide great storytelling possibilities.
